NIRVANA
Nevermind
This is the 2nd album that Nirvana introduced to the world. Nevermind was released sometime in 91' and the songs are still gracing radio stations today. It is amazing that these tracks stilll holds itself all that time. None of the tracks sound dated. When you listen to a song from the early 90's it should be quite obvious that they are from that decade ie. boys to men, U2, and a bunch of other 90s artists; however, Nirvana does not seem dated(seems like a track that was released today) unless you know when grunge was dominating the music industry. The ambience of the tracks range from upbeat poppy to heavy punk. It's a great mix., loud and soft dynamic made it powerful. "Smells like teen spirit" is probably one of the most recognized and beloved singles to grace radio air ways. Who can forget the flannel and greasy haired Cobain playing in a high school gym with creepy looking cheerleaders. Every track served great lyrical purpose, but im not going to bore you with details because the first time I listened to it all I cared about was the great riffs and tortured and raspy voice (simply beautiful).
Although this album is very rock driven, but because it has many poppy melodies its very hooky and is considered pop/rock, thats how it became mainstream (nothing wrong with that). I mean look at the guitar games that implemented Nirvana's songs. Without theses guitar games, many kids today would not have even heard of these guys unless they are hardcore grunge lovers. Mainstream can be a good thing, but obviously not so much to Cobain.
At times the songs are somber and melancholic ("something in the way" & "polly") but the tracks make up with heavy bass and riffs (which is noticeable if you dissect each track). I saw a great documentary that was on muchmoremusic. I cannot remember the title but the producer( andy....something) analyzed and dissected each track and told the story of how Nevermind came to be. When the vocals are isolated, Cobain's intensity just resonated and I definitely appreciated the album and the bass even more after seeing the documentary. I'll try to find on youtube and post it on musicinplethora because it's just that good.
For now, since most of you have picked up some flannel shirts, chuck taylors and played the guitar hero and rock band games, please, go and grab some great music to compliment that grunge inspired wardrobe and experience the wonderful world of grunge rock through nevermind.
cheers,
k
